COURSE OUTLINE:
OBJECTIVE: The goal of this course is to give the student an overview of the underwater still photo and process. Cameras, housings, lighting, exposure, storage, computer editing, and printing. The end of this course will give the student the ability use underwater cameras and take better photos underwater and above. By the end of this course the student will have a basic working knowledge of underwater cameras and will edit 3 to 5 of their best photos ready for printing. They will be able to start a digital portfolio, even with slide film. This course will accommodate slide film for purposes of travel and prints for classroom instruction, although digital is preferred and recommended.
BASIC CAMERA LESSONS
*Digital verses film and how digital captures images.
*Lenses: aperture, shutter speed, and film speeds; manual vs. auto modes.
*Storage of images, organization, and presentation of digital and film.
*Quality of digital cameras and resolution from film and digital and its relationship to presentation.
*Underwater housings: electronic vs. manual
*Exposure: metering and auto exposure vs. manual exposure
*Lighting: strobe vs. strobes and use of available light.
*Use of filters.
*Using the viewfinder to create a better picture before you take it.
*Management of your cameras resources.
*Macro, wide angle and Flat port where to start and how it will affect your image.
*Maintance and care of your camera and why you don’t want your camera in the mask rinse.
TAKING PICTURES UNDERWATER
*Framing your shots.
*Exposure and lighting.
*SCUBA skills and why it will make your shots better with your diving skills.
THE COMPUTER AS YOUR DARKROOM
*Using those editing programs.
*Printing the finale product.
*Presentation of the finished product.
